The Life in Action presentation at your child's school will challenge students to become aware of how they treat their bodies and how this treatment can affect millions of people around the world. In each presentation, an expert speaker from Free The Children uses stories, skits, experiments and multimedia tools to help explain the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
In each participating school, a grade 6 class will be chosen to take part in two workshops: one half day following the school-wide presentation in the fall and a full day in the spring. These workshops allow students to explore the meaning of healthy, active living in greater depth with the guidance of a specially trained facilitator.
Topics addressed include:
The composition of food: the four food groups, calories, fat cells and types of fat
The importance of physical activity: figuring out how much exercise you need to work off a meal and creative ways to get active
Leadership skills: action planning, fundraising and the 7 Steps to Social Involvement
The Life in Action program focuses on grade 6 classes, as at this age youth show a lot of initiative, creativity and desire to help others once their eyes are opened to the global issues. The information and leadership skills participants develop will benefit the school community for at least two years before students leave for high school, allowing for mentoring to take place between current and past participants.
Your Role
We encourage you to sit down and discuss the Life in Action presentation and workshops with your child. What did they learn? What surprised them most? How do they want to change? Supporting your child by asking these questions will not only encourage them to continue to make sound decisions and to pay attention to their lifestyle, but will also help to ensure that they are leading a healthier, more active lifestyle in years to come.
